Difference Between Forged Steel Valve & Cast Steel Valve

I. Manufacturing Process

Forged Steel Check Valve Manufactures China:

Manufactured through the forging process, the steel billet is heated and pressure (such as hammering, extrusion) is applied to form it, and then mechanical processing is performed.

The forging process makes the metal grains refined and the structure dense, without defects such as pores and slag inclusions.

Cast Steel Valve:

Manufactured through the casting process, molten steel is poured into a mold to cool and form, and then processed.

The casting process may cause problems such as pores, shrinkage cavities or uneven structure, which need to be improved through subsequent processing.

II. Material Properties

Forged Steel Valve:

High strength: Forging eliminates internal defects, and the mechanical strength (tensile resistance and impact resistance) is better than that of castings.

Better pressure resistance: suitable for high pressure, high temperature or extreme working conditions.

Better sealing: The metal has high density and is not easy to leak.

Cast Steel Valve:

Lower toughness: The casting structure may contain microscopic defects, making it more susceptible to cracks under extreme stress.

Lower cost: suitable for mass production of complex-shaped or large valves.

III. Structure & Weight

Forged Steel Valve:

The structure is relatively simple, mostly symmetrical or compact in design. Lighter weight (about 20% to 30% lighter than cast steel valves with the same specifications).

Cast Iron Wafer Butterfly Valve Suppliers China:

Complex structures (such as special-shaped flow channels, multi-cavity bodies) can be manufactured. The weight is greater and the wall thickness is usually thicker to make up for the lack of strength.

IV. Applicable Working Conditions

Forged Steel Valve:

High-pressure and high-temperature systems: such as power stations, petrochemical industries, and high-pressure steam pipelines.

Low temperature environment: such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) systems, forged steel has better low temperature toughness.

Hazardous media: toxic, flammable and explosive fluids (due to higher reliability).

China Cast Iron Swing Check Valve:

Medium and low pressure conventional working conditions: such as water treatment, general industrial pipelines, and low-pressure steam.

Corrosive media: Corrosion resistance can be improved by adding alloy elements (such as cast stainless steel valves).

Large diameter valves: When the forging process is limited, casting is more suitable for large valve bodies.

V. Cost & Delivery Period

Forged steel valves: High raw material costs, significant investment in forging dies and equipment. Prolonged production cycle, suitable for small batches or high-standard requirements. Typically higher unit prices.

Cast steel valves: The mold cost is relatively low, making them suitable for mass production. The production cycle is short, and the cost is more competitive.

VI. Common Standards & Markings

China Forged Check Valve:

Specifications: ASTM A105 (carbon steel), A182 (stainless steel), etc. The marking typically includes the term “Forged”.

Cast Iron Gate Valve:

Specifications: ASTM A216 (carbon steel), A351 (stainless steel), etc. The marking typically includes the term “Cast”.
