New development of valves under carbon capture and carbon storage

Driven by the “dual carbon” strategy, many industries have formed a relatively clear path for energy conservation and carbon reduction. The realization of carbon neutrality is inseparable from the application of CCUS technology. The specific application of CCUS technology includes carbon capture, carbon utilization and storage, etc. This series of technology applications naturally involves valve matching. From the perspective of related industries and applications, future development The prospect is worthy of the attention of our valve industry.

1.CCUS concept and industry chain

A.CCUS concept
CCUS may be unfamiliar or even unfamiliar to many people. Therefore, before we understand the impact of CCUS on the valve industry, let’s learn about CCUS together. CCUS is an abbreviation for English (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage)

B.CCUS industry chain.
The entire CCUS industry chain is mainly composed of five links: emission source, capture, transportation, utilization and storage, and products. The three links of capture, transportation, utilization and storage are closely related to the valve industry.

2. The impact of CCUS on the valve industry
Driven by carbon neutrality, the implementation of carbon capture and carbon storage in petrochemical, thermal power, steel, cement, printing and other industries downstream of the valve industry will gradually increase, and will show different characteristics. The benefits of the industry will be gradually released, and we must pay close attention to relevant developments. The demand for valves in the following five industries will increase significantly.

A. The demand of the petrochemical industry is the first to highlight
It is estimated that my country’s petrochemical emission reduction demand in 2030 is about 50 million tons, and it will gradually decrease to 0 by 2040. Because the petrochemical and chemical industries are the main areas of carbon dioxide utilization, and the capture of low energy consumption, investment costs and operation and maintenance costs are low, the application of CUSS technology has been the first to be promoted in this field. In 2021, Sinopec will start the construction of China’s first million-ton CCUS project, the Qilu Petrochemical-Shengli Oilfield CCUS project. After the project is completed, it will become the largest CCUS full-industry chain demonstration base in China. The data provided by Sinopec shows that the amount of carbon dioxide captured by Sinopec in 2020 has reached about 1.3 million tons, of which 300,000 tons will be used for oil field flooding, which has achieved good results in improving crude oil recovery and reducing carbon emissions.

B. The demand for thermal power industry will increase
From the current situation, the demand for valves in the power industry, especially the thermal power industry, is not very large, but under the pressure of the “dual carbon” strategy, the carbon neutralization task of coal-fired power plants is becoming increasingly arduous. According to the forecast of relevant institutions: my country’s electricity demand is expected to increase to 12-15 trillion kWh by 2050, and 430-1.64 billion tons of carbon dioxide need to be reduced through CCUS technology to achieve net zero emissions in the power system. If a coal-fired power plant is installed with CCUS, it can capture 90% of the carbon emissions, making it a low-carbon power generation technology. CCUS application is the main technical means to realize the flexibility of the power system. In this case, the demand for valves caused by the installation of CCUS will increase significantly, and the demand for valves in the power market, especially the thermal power market, will show new growth, which is worthy of the attention of valve industry enterprises.

C. Steel and metallurgical industry demand will grow
It is estimated that the emission reduction demand in 2030 will be 200 million tons to 050 million tons per year. It is worth noting that in addition to the utilization and storage of carbon dioxide in the steel industry, it can also be directly used in the steelmaking process. Taking full advantage of these technologies can reduce emissions by 5%-10%. From this point of view, the relevant valve demand in the steel industry will undergo new changes, and the demand will show a significant growth trend.

D. Cement industry demand will grow substantially
It is estimated that the emission reduction demand in 2030 will be 100 million tons to 152 million tons per year, and the emission reduction demand in 2060 will be 190 million tons to 210 million tons per year. The carbon dioxide produced by the decomposition of limestone in the cement industry accounts for about 60% of the total emissions, so CCUS is a necessary means for the decarbonization of the cement industry.

E.Hydrogen energy industry demand will be widely used
Extracting blue hydrogen from methane in natural gas requires the use of a large number of valves, because the energy is captured from the process of CO2 production, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is necessary, and transmission and storage require the use of a large number of valves.

3. Suggestions for the valve industry
CCUS will have a broad space for development. Although it faces various difficulties, in the long run, CCUS will have a broad space for development, which is unquestionable. The valve industry should maintain a clear understanding and adequate mental preparation for this. It is recommended that the valve industry actively deploy CCUS industry related fields

A. Actively participate in CCUS demonstration projects. For the CCUS project being implemented in China, the valve industry enterprises must actively participate in the implementation of the project in terms of technology and product research and development, sum up experience in the process of participating in the implementation of the project, and make sufficient preparations for the subsequent large-scale mass production and valve matching. Technology, talent and product reserves.

B. Focus on the current CCUS key industry layout. Focus on the coal power industry where China’s carbon capture technology is mainly used, and the petroleum industry where geological storage is concentrated to deploy CCUS project valves, and deploy the valves in the areas where these industries are located, such as the Ordos Basin and the Junggar-Tuha Basin, which are important coal producing areas. The Bohai Bay Basin and the Pearl River Mouth Basin, which are important oil and gas producing areas, have established close cooperative relations with relevant enterprises to seize the opportunity.

C. Provide certain financial support for the technology and product research and development of CCUS project valves. In order to take the lead in the valve field of CCUS projects in the future, it is recommended that industry companies set aside a certain amount of funds in research and development, and provide support for CCUS projects in terms of technology research and development, so as to create a good environment for the layout of the CCUS industry.

In short, for the CCUS industry, it is recommended that the valve industry fully understand the new industrial changes under the “dual-carbon” strategy and the new opportunities for development that come with it, keep pace with the times, and achieve new development in the industry!
