Saudi Aramco Jafurah Phase II starts: Huge valve orders go to Chinese companies and European and American giants

On March 1, 2026, Saudi Aramco officially launched the bidding for the core equipment of its giant gas field, the Jafurah Phase II project. This project in the Eastern Province is one of the largest unconventional natural gas projects in the Middle East, with a total investment of more than US$15 billion. Among the huge procurement list, high-pressure anti-sulfur valves have become the core focus of this round of bidding due to their high technical threshold and harsh application environment.

It is reported that this procurement project involves thousands of special butterfly valves, gate valves and wellhead check valves suitable for extreme high pressure (up to 15,000 psi) and high sulfur environments (Sour Service). Due to the extremely complex geological conditions of the Jafurah gas field, almost stringent requirements have been placed on the hydrogen embrittlement resistance and sealing reliability of valve materials. Saudi Aramco clearly stated in the bidding documents that all winning products must pass the latest ISO 15848-1 low leakage certification and use proven duplex stainless steel or nickel-based alloy materials.

In this fierce international bidding, many top valve manufacturers from China, the United States and Europe entered the final shortlist. Industry analysts point out that Chinese companies have successfully broken the long-term monopoly of European and American companies in this field with their breakthroughs in the research and development of ultra-deep well valve materials in the past two years, and are expected to capture about 40% of this project. The implementation of this project will not only significantly increase Saudi Arabia’s natural gas production capacity and help it achieve its energy diversification goals in the “2030 Vision”, but will also promote the further evolution of global high-end valve manufacturing technology toward extreme corrosion resistance and intelligent control. The first batch of equipment is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2026 to ensure that the project will be put into production as scheduled by 2027.
