Y strainers mechanically remove solids from flowing steam, gases or liquid piping systems with the use of a perforated or wire mesh straining screen, and are used to protect equipment. From a simple low pressure cast iron threaded strainer to a large, high pressure special alloy unit with a custom cap design.

A Y-strainer is a mechanical device designed to remove impurities and solid particles from fluids or gases flowing through pipes. It consists of a solid cylindrical body with a conical or angular filter element inside, shaped like a “Y” – hence the name. Fluid enters the filter through the inlet, sediment or solid particles are trapped by the filter, and clean fluid passes through the outlet.

The primary purpose of a Y-strainer is to protect sensitive components such as valves, pumps, and other equipment that may be damaged by debris accumulation. By effectively removing contaminants, Y-strainers significantly extend the service life of these components, minimizing maintenance costs and unplanned downtime.

The function of a Y-strainer is relatively simple. When fluid or gas flows into the Y-shaped body, it encounters the filter element and impurities are captured. These impurities can be leaves, stones, rust, or any other solid particles that may be present in the fluid stream.

Unlike other types of strainers, a Y-Strainer has the advantage of being able to be installed in either a horizontal or vertical position. Obviously, in both cases, the screening element must be on the “down side” of the strainer body so that the entrapped material can properly collect in it.
