I. What is UL certification? Why does the valve need it?
UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is a world-renowned independent safety certification organization. In the North American market, UL certification is not mandatory by the government, but it is an “access card” for fire protection, gas, industrial control and other fields. Many US project tenders clearly require “Valve shall be UL listed”. For valves, it indicates that the product has met stringent standards for electrical safety, fire risk and extreme working conditions. It is a key qualification for entering the high-end market in North America and participating in project bidding.
II. What standards are the UL certification of valves mainly based on?
Valves for different purposes apply to different standards:
- UL 429: For electrically operated valves (such as solenoid valves), evaluate their electrical insulation, temperature rise, coil life, etc.
- UL 842: Manual, pressure or temperature control valves covering flammable and combustible liquids (gasoline, diesel, fuel, etc.).
- Fire valves: gate valves, butterfly valves, check valve etc. must comply with UL 262, UL 1091 and other standards, and testing includes high-pressure impact and fire environment simulations. In addition, there are special standards such as UL 842B for diesel/biodiesel valves.
III. What is the focus of UL certification testing?
The core is to verify “worst case safety”. In addition to pressure resistance and sealing, special attention should be paid to:
- Electrical safety: coil insulation, failure modes, loss of power conditions.
- Extreme working conditions: operating capabilities and material aging performance within the temperature range of -29°C to 52°C.
- Fail-safe: simulates the risk of misoperation or material aging.
